Every summer, thousands of people head to Newcastle Quayside and the wider North East coastline to enjoy the warmer weather. While the River Tyne and nearby beaches offer stunning scenery, emergency services continue to warn that the greatest danger is often invisible. It is not the current, the depth or even the weather. It is cold water shock.
Many people believe that if the air feels warm, the water must be safe. In reality, rivers such as the Tyne often remain below 15C, even during heatwaves. That temperature is low enough to trigger a powerful physical reaction that can overwhelm even strong swimmers within seconds.
Understanding what happens to the body and remembering the simple F.L.O.A.T. technique could give someone the precious time they need to survive until help arrives.
What is cold water shock?.
Cold water shock is the body's automatic response to sudden immersion in cold water. It is not caused by hypothermia, which develops over a longer period. Instead, it happens almost instantly.
When someone unexpectedly enters water below around 15C, the body reacts with an involuntary gasp, rapid breathing and a sharp increase in heart rate and blood pressure. These reactions make it difficult to control breathing and greatly increase the risk of inhaling water. Muscle strength and swimming ability can also reduce within moments, even in people who consider themselves confident swimmers.
This is one of the main reasons why emergency services regularly remind people not to jump into rivers to cool off during hot weather.
Why the River Tyne can be dangerous even in summer.
On a sunny afternoon in Newcastle, temperatures can climb well above 25C, encouraging people to spend time along the Quayside. However, the River Tyne is a tidal river, meaning fresh water mixes with colder sea water and temperatures remain surprisingly low throughout much of the year.
Strong currents, changing tides, underwater debris and steep riverbanks add further hazards. Someone who falls into the river unexpectedly may experience cold water shock before they have time to react.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Northumbria Police and HM Coastguard regularly respond to incidents on the River Tyne, particularly during warmer months when more people are visiting the waterfront. Public rescue equipment, including throw lines and lifebuoys, has been installed along much of Newcastle Quayside to help bystanders assist safely while waiting for emergency crews.
Understanding the F.L.O.A.T. method.
One of the most effective survival techniques promoted by water safety organisations is commonly known as "Float to Live". To make it even easier to remember, many safety educators summarise the advice using the word F.L.O.A.T.
F - Fight the instinct to panic.
The natural reaction is to swim hard or thrash around. This uses energy and makes breathing even more difficult. Instead, focus on staying calm.
L - Lean back.
Tilt your head back with your ears under the water. This helps keep your airway clear while allowing your body to float naturally.
O - Open your lungs.
Try to relax and control your breathing. Slow, steady breaths help reduce the effects of cold water shock and allow your heart rate to settle.
A - Allow your arms and legs to move gently.
Small movements with your hands and feet can improve balance without wasting valuable energy.
T - Think before you swim.
Once your breathing has returned to normal, assess your surroundings. If safety is nearby, swim calmly towards it. Otherwise, continue floating and call for help if possible.
The RNLI says this simple technique can dramatically improve a person's chances of survival because it gives the body time to recover from the initial shock response.
The statistics behind the advice.
The importance of understanding cold water shock becomes clear when looking at recent figures.
The National Water Safety Forum recorded 202 accidental water-related deaths across the UK during 2025, with 57 percent occurring at inland waterways such as rivers, canals and lakes. Men accounted for 85 percent of accidental fatalities, while 32 percent happened during everyday activities like walking or running, showing that many victims never intended to enter the water at all.
Research carried out for the RNLI also found that 76 percent of people in the UK would not think to float first if they suddenly found themselves struggling in the water, despite this being the recommended survival technique. In the North East specifically, 78 percent said they would not instinctively float first.
Since the Float to Live campaign began in 2017, the RNLI says more than 50 people have contacted the charity to report that floating helped save their lives, demonstrating the real-world impact of the advice.
Small actions can save lives.
The best way to avoid cold water shock is to stay out of unsafe water in the first place, but accidents can happen to anyone. Slips on riverbanks, unexpected falls and unstable edges are among the most common reasons people end up in the water.
If you see someone struggling in the River Tyne, do not jump in after them. Instead, call 999 immediately, encourage them to float on their back and use a nearby throw line or lifebuoy if one is available and it is safe to do so. This approach protects both the casualty and the rescuer while giving emergency services the best chance of reaching the scene quickly.
As Newcastle continues to welcome thousands of visitors to its riverside every week, understanding the science behind cold water shock and remembering the F.L.O.A.T. method could make the difference between panic and survival. Sometimes, the most powerful lifesaving skill is simply knowing when to stop swimming and start floating.
