Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that around 489,000 heat-related deaths occur every year between 2000 and 2019. It also reports that heat-related mortality among adults aged over 65 increased by approximately 85 percent over the past two decades as temperatures continued to rise.
Climate scientists also estimate that human activity has already warmed the Earth's average surface temperature by around 1.3C to 1.4C since the late nineteenth century, increasing both the frequency and intensity of many extreme weather events.
These figures demonstrate that heat is no longer simply an inconvenience during summer. It has become a significant public health issue with long-term consequences.
The financial impact extends beyond hospitals.
The hidden cost of heatwaves is not limited to emergency care.
Hospitals often face increased spending on cooling equipment, temporary ventilation, additional staffing and higher electricity usage. GP surgeries frequently report greater demand from vulnerable patients seeking advice or treatment for heat-related symptoms.
Cancelled operations, delayed appointments and longer waiting times can also have financial consequences for NHS trusts already managing stretched budgets.
Businesses feel the effects as well. The Office for National Statistics has previously highlighted that hot weather can reduce workplace productivity, while employers may experience higher sickness absence during prolonged heatwaves.

Health professionals continue to stress that many heat-related illnesses are preventable.
Simple steps such as drinking plenty of water, avoiding direct sunlight during the hottest hours, closing curtains to keep homes cool and regularly checking on vulnerable relatives can significantly reduce health risks.
Residents across Newcastle and the North East are also encouraged to follow official heat-health alerts issued by the Met Office and UK Health Security Agency, particularly when temperatures are forecast to remain high overnight.
