Devices rarely stop working. They stop being supported, which is a different problem with different solutions.

The technology industry encourages replacement on a cycle measured in a small number of years. A great deal of hardware remains perfectly capable well beyond that point.

The genuine limit is usually not performance but support. Understanding the difference lets you keep devices considerably longer without taking unnecessary risks.

Here is how to judge it.

End of support is the real deadline.

When a manufacturer stops issuing security updates for a device, newly discovered vulnerabilities are never fixed on it.

The device continues to work. It simply becomes progressively less safe to use for anything involving personal data, banking or email, and the risk compounds over time as more vulnerabilities are found.

This applies to phones, tablets, computers, routers, smart home hubs and connected cameras alike, and routers are frequently the most overlooked.

Check support status before deciding.

Most manufacturers now publish support commitments and end dates.

For phones, settings will usually show the current software version, and the manufacturer's site lists supported devices. For computers, operating system support dates are published well in advance.

Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025, which left a substantial number of otherwise functional machines unsupported, and many are not eligible to upgrade to Windows 11 due to hardware requirements.

For those machines, options include paid extended security updates where available, or installing a supported Linux distribution, several of which run well on older hardware and are free.

Smart home devices are the current problem.

Connected devices are particularly vulnerable to becoming obsolete through decisions taken elsewhere.

Google Assistant is being fully retired during 2026, and Assistant is being replaced by Gemini across Google's devices. A number of older soundbars, televisions and smart home products depend on Assistant, and some require the Assistant app for initial setup.

Manufacturers of out-of-support devices are unlikely to update them, which means functioning hardware may lose voice control or become difficult to set up after a reset.

If you own devices in that position, check the manufacturer's statements, avoid factory resetting anything that still works, and consider whether an alternative assistant is supported.

More broadly, cloud-dependent devices stop working entirely if a company withdraws its service, which has happened repeatedly across the industry. Devices with local control, or support for open standards such as Matter, are less exposed.

Batteries are usually the actual problem.

Most phones and laptops become frustrating because the battery has degraded, not because the processor has aged.

Battery health is visible in settings on most devices. Below around 80 per cent of original capacity, runtime and performance both suffer noticeably.

Replacement costs a fraction of a new device and is available through manufacturers and independent repairers. Newcastle has a substantial number of independent repair shops in the city centre and across the suburbs offering battery and screen replacement.

Be aware that third-party repairs may affect warranty and, on some devices, disable specific features, so check before proceeding on anything still covered.

Simple maintenance extends life.

Clearing storage improves performance markedly on devices running low, since both phones and computers slow considerably when nearly full.

Removing unused applications reduces background activity and attack surface alike. On laptops, replacing a mechanical hard drive with an SSD transforms performance on machines that would otherwise be discarded, and adding memory is frequently possible and inexpensive.

Cleaning dust from laptop vents and fans prevents thermal throttling, which is a common and entirely fixable cause of slow performance in older machines.

Reduce risk on unsupported devices.

If you continue using something past end of support, limit what it does.

Keep it off banking, email and anything involving personal data. Use it for media, games or as a dedicated device for a single low-risk purpose.

Keep it on a guest network separated from your main devices, and remove any accounts it no longer needs.

Unsupported routers should be replaced rather than nursed along, since they sit between everything in the house and the internet.

Disposal has rules and options.

Electrical items should not go in general waste. Newcastle City Council and neighbouring authorities operate household waste recycling centres accepting electrical goods, and collection services exist for larger items.

Retailers selling electrical goods have obligations to accept old equipment for recycling under waste electrical regulations, either in store or on delivery of a replacement.

Before disposing of anything, remove personal data properly: sign out of accounts, remove SIM and memory cards, and perform a factory reset. On computers, a reset alone may not be sufficient, and encrypting the drive before wiping is safer.

Repair and reuse locally.

Repair cafés operate across the North East, staffed by volunteers who will help fix electrical items, and they generally prefer to show you how rather than do it for you.

Charities including furniture and IT reuse organisations accept working equipment for redistribution, and some refurbish devices for people who cannot afford them, which addresses digital exclusion directly.

For anything genuinely beyond repair, recycling recovers materials including copper, gold and rare earth elements, and the environmental case for doing it properly is substantial.
