For thousands of students arriving in Newcastle this September, Induction Week 2026 will be the first proper taste of university life. Between finding lecture theatres, meeting flatmates and working out where to buy groceries without emptying your bank account, there is plenty to take in.

The good news is that Newcastle is built for students. Nearly 50,000 students are enrolled across the city's two universities, according to Newcastle City Council, while Newcastle University says around one in six people in the city is a student. Monday 21 September is the key date for many new students. Newcastle University's 2026-27 academic year officially begins on 21 September, with students expected to be on campus by then. Some schools are running a one-week induction period before teaching begins on Monday 28 September.

What actually happens during Induction Week.

Induction Week is not simply Freshers' Week under a different name. Academic introductions form a major part of the schedule, alongside campus tours, IT setup, registration, course meetings and information about university support.

New students should expect to learn how their course operates, where teaching takes place and which online systems they will use. Newcastle University also advises students to get familiar with Canvas, its virtual learning environment.

Then comes the social side. Students can expect societies, fairs, activities and nightlife throughout the week. Newcastle Students' Union is planning an induction programme featuring fairs, opportunities and discounted or free activities, giving students plenty of chances to meet people beyond their accommodation or course.

How expensive is student life in Newcastle.

Budgeting is likely to be high on the list of concerns for new arrivals. Newcastle University cites an average UK student living cost of just over £1,100 per month, although individual spending can vary considerably depending on accommodation and lifestyle.

There is some reassuring news for North East students. Newcastle University says the North East is the UK's second most affordable region for students and Newcastle ranks among the top five most affordable UK cities in the QS Best Student Cities 2026 rankings.

The university also reports that everyday living costs in Newcastle are around 22% lower than London when rent is excluded. For students watching every pound during their first term, learning where the affordable supermarkets, cafés and student deals are located could make a noticeable difference.

Getting around Newcastle during your first week.

One advantage of studying in Newcastle is that much of the city centre can be explored on foot. Students will quickly become familiar with areas including Haymarket, Jesmond, Shieldfield, Sandyford and Ouseburn, while the Metro provides links across Newcastle, Gateshead and the wider Tyne and Wear area.

It is worth using Induction Week to learn the journey between accommodation and campus before the first 9am lecture arrives. Students should also check which travel discounts they qualify for rather than automatically paying standard fares.

There can be pressure to make friends immediately, but Induction Week offers far more than nights out. Societies, sports clubs, course activities and daytime events can be easier places to start conversations, particularly for anyone who does not enjoy clubbing.

With Newcastle University alone reporting more than 25,000 students at its Newcastle campus in 2025-26, there will be plenty of other newcomers trying to find their feet too. The most useful approach may simply be to try a mixture of activities, learn the city and leave enough energy for the first week of teaching.
