HMP Deerbolt Inmate Death Sparks Independent Investigation

An official investigation has been launched following the death of a 26-year-old prisoner at HMP Deerbolt in Barnard Castle, County Durham.

Bradley Kinnear died on Thursday afternoon after emergency services were called to the Category C training prison. Durham Constabulary has confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious, while a file will now be prepared for the coroner.

The incident has attracted attention across the North East, including in Newcastle, where many families have relatives serving sentences at prisons across the region. As with every death in custody, the case will now be independently examined to establish the full circumstances surrounding what happened.

Emergency services attended the prison.

Emergency crews were dispatched to HMP Deerbolt shortly before 4pm on Thursday following reports of an incident inside the prison.

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that two ambulance crews attended the scene after receiving a call at 3.59pm. The Great North Air Ambulance Service was also activated at 4.08pm, but its specialist critical care team was stood down shortly afterwards before reaching the prison.

Despite the rapid emergency response, Mr Kinnear sadly died at the prison.

Durham Constabulary said officers were called to HMP Deerbolt at 4.50pm and have since been supporting the man's family during what has been described as an incredibly difficult time.

Police confirm death is not suspicious.

Detectives have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said officers will prepare a report for HM Coroner, who will determine the medical cause of death and consider the findings during the inquest process.

While the police investigation has concluded that there is no indication of criminal activity, the death will still undergo the standard independent review required whenever someone dies while in prison custody.

The Prison and Probation Ombudsman has confirmed it will investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

Every death in custody across England and Wales is automatically referred to the independent watchdog. The investigation aims to establish the facts, identify whether prison procedures were correctly followed and determine whether any lessons can be learned to improve prisoner welfare and safety in the future.

A Prison Service spokesperson said the organisation would cooperate fully with the investigation and respond once the Ombudsman's findings have been published.

The process can often take several months, particularly where medical evidence and witness statements need to be examined before a final report is completed.

Although the circumstances surrounding this incident remain unknown, deaths in custody continue to receive close scrutiny across England and Wales.

According to the latest Ministry of Justice Safety in Custody statistics, there were 352 deaths in prison custody in the 12 months to March 2026, representing a 12 percent decrease compared with the previous year. During the same period, there were 67 self-inflicted deaths recorded across the prison estate.

Officials stress that every death in custody is individually investigated, regardless of the suspected cause, with recommendations often made where improvements can strengthen prison safety, healthcare or operational procedures.

While HMP Deerbolt is located in Barnard Castle, the prison serves offenders from across the wider North East, meaning news from the establishment is closely followed in Newcastle and surrounding communities.

The outcome of the Prison and Probation Ombudsman's investigation is expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding Bradley Kinnear's death, although no timescale has yet been confirmed.
