Newcastle Northumberland Street Fire Sparks Major Emergency Response

Newcastle Northumberland Street Fire Sparks Major Emergency Response
A major fire on Newcastle’s busy Northumberland Street triggered a large emergency response on Monday night after flames spread through the upper floors and roof of a city centre building above a popular food outlet.

Nine fire crews were called to the scene near the Haymarket area after reports of a blaze breaking out inside a three-storey property. Dramatic scenes unfolded in the heart of Newcastle as firefighters worked to contain the fire while police established a cordon around part of the shopping street.

Videos shared from the scene showed thick smoke rising above the building while firefighters used an aerial ladder platform to tackle the blaze from above. The incident drew attention from passers-by and nearby businesses as emergency vehicles lined the street late into the evening.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire initially started on the first floor of the building before spreading to the second floor and into the roof space area.

Firefighters remained at the scene for several hours as crews worked alongside Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service to bring the situation under control safely.

The affected property is understood to include a Pret a Manger branch on the ground floor, with upper levels believed to have been vacant at the time of the incident. Images captured on Tuesday morning showed boarded-up windows at the front of the building following the overnight fire.

Pret a Manger remained closed on Tuesday while investigations and safety assessments continued.

No injuries reported after Newcastle city centre blaze.

Despite the scale of the response and the visible smoke across the city centre, emergency services confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident.

Fire crews said no rescues were required from the building, while ambulance teams that attended the scene were later stood down after it became clear nobody had been harmed.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

They said: “The fire, located on Northumberland Street, initially started on the first floor of the three-storey building but later spread to the second floor and roof space area.

“We worked at the scene alongside blue light colleagues from Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service.

“No persons required rescue during the incident. Our firefighters left the scene at 12.25am in the early hours of Tuesday morning, once the fire had been safely extinguished.”

The swift response from emergency crews helped prevent the fire from spreading further to neighbouring properties in one of Newcastle’s busiest retail districts.

Police cordon sealed off part of busy shopping street.

Northumberland Street is one of the North East’s most well-known shopping destinations and remains heavily used during both daytime and evening hours. The closure of part of the street during the emergency caused disruption for pedestrians and nearby businesses.

Northumbria Police assisted fire crews by securing the area and helping to manage public safety while the operation was ongoing.

A spokesperson for the force said officers were alerted to the incident shortly after 9.10pm on Monday evening.

They said: “Emergency services attended the scene where nobody was found to be injured, and the fire was extinguished a short time later.

“Officers assisted the fire service by setting up a cordon. Enquiries into the cause of the fire remain ongoing.”

Investigators are now working to establish exactly how the fire started, although no official cause has yet been confirmed.

Businesses affected as investigation continues.

Tuesday morning brought visible signs of the overnight damage, with parts of the building boarded up and nearby businesses assessing the impact of the incident.

While the upper floors were reportedly vacant, the closure of Pret a Manger drew attention from commuters and shoppers returning to the city centre the following day.

The incident has once again highlighted the challenges emergency services face when dealing with fires in densely built-up urban areas, especially in locations surrounded by businesses, restaurants and heavy foot traffic.

Witnesses described seeing flashing blue lights across the city centre while smoke could be seen rising above surrounding buildings. Firefighters using elevated platforms became a focal point for onlookers gathered behind police barriers.

The rapid containment of the blaze likely prevented more extensive damage in an area filled with commercial properties and historic structures.

Fire crews praised after rapid response.

Many people on social media praised firefighters and emergency workers for their quick response and professionalism during the incident.

Large emergency responses such as this are relatively uncommon in Newcastle city centre, meaning the sight of multiple fire engines and aerial equipment drew significant public attention.

By the early hours of Tuesday morning, crews had safely extinguished the blaze and the cordon was gradually reduced.

Investigations into the exact cause of the Northumberland Street fire are expected to continue over the coming days.
