A police investigation is continuing after a suspected cannabis farm was discovered following a house fire in Gateshead that forced residents from nearby homes.
Emergency crews were called to Windsor Avenue in the Bensham area on Friday evening after reports of a serious blaze at a residential property. Thick smoke could be seen rising from the building as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control, while police established a cordon around the scene.
The incident quickly attracted attention from local residents, many of whom watched as emergency services battled the flames near Saltwell Park, one of Gateshead's most popular green spaces and a landmark known across the wider Newcastle area.
Emergency Response Following Fire.
Firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel arrived at the property shortly after 7.30pm. Witnesses reported seeing smoke pouring from the roof as crews deployed specialist equipment, including aerial ladder platforms, to tackle the fire from above.
As a precaution, residents living in neighbouring properties were temporarily evacuated while emergency services assessed the risks posed by the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries were reported and those affected were later allowed to return to their homes once the area had been declared safe.
The swift response helped prevent the fire from spreading further through the residential street, which sits within a densely populated part of Gateshead close to Newcastle city centre.
Suspected Cannabis Farm Discovered.
Northumbria Police have since confirmed that the fire is believed to have originated inside a suspected cannabis cultivation operation located within the property.
Cannabis farms are often hidden inside ordinary residential homes and can pose significant dangers to surrounding communities. Illegal electrical wiring, overloaded circuits and makeshift lighting systems are frequently used to power large-scale growing operations, increasing the risk of fires.
According to data published by the National Fire Chiefs Council, cannabis farms are linked to hundreds of fire incidents across the UK each year. Fire services have repeatedly warned that bypassed electricity meters and unsafe electrical installations can create a substantial hazard for both occupants and neighbouring properties.
The discovery in Gateshead has once again highlighted concerns about illegal cannabis production within residential areas across the North East.
Investigation Continues.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police confirmed that officers are continuing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police were first alerted to the situation through Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service after the fire was reported at the Windsor Avenue address. Emergency crews extinguished the blaze within a relatively short period, but extensive damage was caused to the affected property.
Investigators are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the suspected cannabis farm and determine who may have been responsible for operating it.
Officers have appealed for anyone with information to come forward and assist with ongoing enquiries.
Growing Concern Across the North East.
The Gateshead incident reflects a wider issue facing communities across Newcastle, Gateshead and the broader North East region.
Recent law enforcement operations have uncovered a number of cannabis cultivation sites hidden within houses, commercial units and vacant properties. Organised criminal groups are often linked to these operations due to the significant profits that can be generated from large-scale cannabis production.
National crime figures show police forces across England and Wales continue to identify thousands of cannabis cultivation sites annually. Many are discovered only after neighbours report suspicious activity or when emergency incidents such as fires expose their existence.
Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report concerns about unusual property activity, including constantly covered windows, strong odours, excessive condensation or unusual electrical alterations.
Appeal for Information.
Northumbria Police are asking anyone who may have information about the Windsor Avenue fire or the suspected cannabis farm to contact officers.
Information can be provided through the force's website, via social media direct message channels, or by calling 101. Members of the public should quote reference number NP-20260605-1096 when making contact.
As investigations continue, residents in Gateshead and nearby Newcastle communities will be hoping for answers about what led to the dangerous blaze and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
