Woman's Ordeal Ends As Newcastle Domestic Abuser Jailed

A Newcastle man has been sentenced to more than three years in prison after a court heard his prolonged campaign of domestic abuse left a woman with severe and lasting mental health trauma.

Kern Rayne, 40, was jailed for three years and four months after being found guilty of coercive and controlling behaviour following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court. The court heard that his abusive behaviour continued over a period of more than two and a half years, during which the victim endured repeated violence, intimidation and emotional manipulation.

A Pattern Of Abuse.

Judge Edward Bindloss told the court that Rayne's actions went far beyond isolated incidents and instead formed a sustained pattern of coercive control. Evidence presented during the trial showed the abuse took place between January 2023 and September 2025 and involved both physical assaults and psychological intimidation.

Among the offences accepted by the court were repeated punches, throwing a bottle at the victim's head, pouring coffee and bleach over her, damaging her property and sending persistent messages demanding to know her whereabouts. The judge also heard that Rayne isolated the woman from family and friends while making baseless accusations of infidelity driven by what was described as cocaine-fuelled paranoia and extreme jealousy.

Victim Speaks About Lasting Impact.

In a powerful statement read to the court, the victim described the emotional damage caused by the abuse, saying she continues to struggle every day with its effects.

She said Rayne had denied responsibility throughout the proceedings, adding that while he claimed he could not remember what happened, she would never forget the abuse she experienced. She also said she could never forgive him because he had failed to acknowledge the harm he caused or show genuine remorse.

Judge Bindloss rejected Rayne's claim that the relationship had been equally toxic, instead concluding that he had been the clear aggressor throughout the offending.

Domestic Abuse Remains A Major Issue.

The case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic abuse across Newcastle and the wider UK. According to the Office for National Statistics, an estimated 2.3 million adults aged 16 years and over experienced domestic abuse in England and Wales during the year ending March 2024. Women were significantly more likely to be victims than men, with coercive and controlling behaviour remaining one of the most commonly reported forms of abuse. The Crime Survey for England and Wales has also shown that many victims experience repeated incidents before seeking help or reporting offences to police. These figures underline the importance of recognising early warning signs and encouraging victims to access support services.

Sentence Brings Case To A Close.

During sentencing, Judge Bindloss criticised Rayne for continuing to blame the victim rather than accepting responsibility for his actions. The court heard he remained unwilling to acknowledge the seriousness of his offending despite the evidence presented during the trial.

The prison sentence brings the criminal proceedings to an end, but for the victim, the emotional impact is expected to continue long after the case has concluded. The prosecution serves as another reminder of the determination by Northumbria Police and Newcastle Crown Court to pursue offenders responsible for coercive control and domestic abuse.
