Another Daylight Sexual Assault Sparks Fresh Newcastle Police Appeal

A woman has reported being sexually assaulted while walking through an underpass in Newcastle, with police continuing enquiries into what is now the latest in a concerning series of reported daylight sexual assaults linked to public parks and open spaces across the city.

The incident happened shortly before 2pm on Tuesday, July 28, as the woman walked from Thornaby Close in Kingston Park towards Greendyke Court in the Newbiggin Hall area. According to Northumbria Police, she was approached by a man she did not know, who allegedly touched her over the top of her clothing before leaving the area.

The latest report brings the number of reported daylight sexual assaults in Newcastle's public parks and nearby green spaces to six within the last few weeks, adding to growing concerns among residents about safety while walking during the day.

Police continue investigation.

Northumbria Police said the suspect left before officers were contacted and enquiries remain ongoing.

The man is described as being Black, in his 20s, wearing a black T-shirt, grey sweatpants and orange trainers.

Officers are urging anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour in the area, or who has CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from around the time of the incident, to come forward.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly before 2pm on Tuesday (July 28) we received a report of sexual assault in the Newbiggin Hall area of Newcastle. It was reported that the victim was walking through the underpass from Thornaby Close towards Greendyke Court when a man, unknown to her, approached her and inappropriately touched her over the top of her clothes.

"The offender left the scene prior to us receiving the report."

Growing concern across Newcastle.

The latest incident is likely to heighten public concern following several similar reports across Newcastle in recent weeks. While police have not confirmed whether any of the reported incidents are linked, the latest allegation marks the sixth reported daylight sexual assault connected to public parks or surrounding open areas in the city over a relatively short period.

Residents have increasingly raised concerns about feeling safe when walking through parks, underpasses and pedestrian routes during daylight hours, particularly in quieter locations.

National figures highlight wider issue.

Although incidents like this remain relatively uncommon, official statistics show sexual offences continue to present a significant challenge across England and Wales.

According to the Office for National Statistics, around 900,000 adults experienced sexual assault, including attempted offences, during the year ending March 2025. Police also recorded 209,079 sexual offences across England and Wales during the same period, an increase of 11 percent compared with the previous year. The ONS notes that many sexual offences are never reported, meaning the true number of victims is likely to be higher.

Police continue to appeal for information as investigations into the Newcastle incident progress.
