Police Make Arrest Following Newcastle Glass Bottle Incident
A man has been arrested after an alleged glass bottle attack in Newcastle city centre left another man requiring hospital treatment for injuries to his head, face and arm.

The incident, which happened on Oxford Street on Friday evening, prompted a response from emergency services and has once again highlighted concerns surrounding violent incidents in busy city centre locations.

Northumbria Police confirmed they were called to reports of a disturbance shortly after 6pm on June 5. Officers attended the scene and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

What Happened On Oxford Street.

According to police, the incident began following a verbal altercation involving a group consisting of two men and a woman. The group is believed to have become involved in a disagreement with another man who was not known to them.

Investigators allege that during the confrontation one of the men assaulted the victim using a glass bottle.

The victim, a man in his twenties, suffered cuts and injuries to his arm, face and head. Thankfully, police have confirmed the injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

He was taken to hospital for treatment before later being discharged.

By the time officers arrived, those believed to have been involved had already left the area.

Arrest Made As Investigation Continues.

Following enquiries, police arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of wounding with intent.

The suspect remains in police custody while officers continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said officers are carrying out ongoing enquiries and are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the disturbance to come forward.

Investigators are particularly interested in speaking to people who were in the Oxford Street area around the time of the incident and may have captured footage on mobile phones or dashcams.

Newcastle City Centre Remains One Of The Region's Busiest Areas.

Oxford Street sits close to some of Newcastle's busiest nightlife, retail and transport locations, attracting thousands of visitors every week.

Newcastle city centre welcomes millions of visitors each year and remains one of the North East's most popular destinations for shopping, dining and entertainment. Areas surrounding Northumberland Street, Monument and the Quayside regularly experience high footfall, particularly during weekends and evening periods.

While violent incidents remain relatively uncommon compared with the number of people visiting the city, police continue to prioritise tackling alcohol-related disorder and antisocial behaviour in key city centre locations.

Crime Statistics Show Violence Remains A National Concern.

Recent Home Office data shows that police forces across England and Wales recorded more than 2 million violence against the person offences during the latest reporting period.

Meanwhile, Office for National Statistics figures indicate that sharp object and weapon-related offences continue to be a significant concern for police nationwide, particularly in urban centres and busy night-time economy areas.

Northumbria Police regularly conduct patrols and targeted operations in Newcastle city centre aimed at reducing violent crime and improving public safety.

The force has also invested in CCTV monitoring, neighbourhood policing initiatives and partnership work with local businesses to help prevent incidents before they occur.

Ambulance Service Also Responded.

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed it received reports regarding an injured man in the city centre on Friday evening.

However, a spokesperson said the call was later stood down after police confirmed the patient had been transported to hospital by alternative means.

Emergency services frequently work together during city centre incidents to ensure injured people receive prompt treatment while allowing police officers to secure scenes and gather evidence.

Appeal For Information.

Officers are continuing to investigate and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could assist enquiries to get in touch.

Members of the public can contact Northumbria Police through social media, online reporting channels or by calling 101.

Anyone providing information is asked to quote reference number NP-20260605-0974.

As investigations continue, police hope witness accounts and potential video footage will help establish exactly what happened and bring clarity to the events that unfolded on Oxford Street.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of reporting violence and suspicious behaviour promptly, helping authorities keep Newcastle city centre safe for residents, workers and visitors alike.
