The UK's third heatwave of 2026 is gathering strength, with forecasters expecting temperatures to climb steadily throughout the week. While southern England is likely to experience the highest temperatures, people across Newcastle and the wider North East can also expect noticeably warmer conditions as the hot spell spreads north.
Unlike the intense burst of heat experienced in late June, this latest period of hot weather is expected to remain in place for longer. Although it may not challenge the UK's highest temperatures, the extended duration could still have an impact on daily life, travel, outdoor events and public health.
Newcastle Set for a Warmer Week.
Residents across Newcastle should prepare for a significant rise in temperatures compared with recent days. While the North East is unlikely to match the 34C forecast for parts of southern England, the city is expected to enjoy plenty of sunshine, warmer afternoons and increasingly mild evenings.
Local parks, outdoor attractions and the city's riverside areas are likely to become busy as people make the most of the summer weather. However, health experts continue to advise people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure during the hottest part of the day and regularly check on elderly relatives or neighbours.
Warmer overnight temperatures can also make sleeping more difficult, particularly in built up urban areas where buildings retain heat after sunset.
Southern England Faces The Highest Temperatures.
Weather models indicate temperatures across London and the South East could reach around 34C by Wednesday and Thursday. Parts of the Midlands, East Anglia and eastern Wales are also expected to experience temperatures above 30C for several consecutive days.
The UK Health Security Agency has issued yellow heat-health alerts covering much of central and southern England, warning that prolonged hot weather can increase pressure on health and social care services, particularly for vulnerable people.
Although Newcastle sits outside the alert area, warmer than average conditions are still forecast across much of northern England during the week.
A Longer Lasting Heatwave.
The defining feature of this latest spell is expected to be its longevity rather than record-breaking temperatures.
Earlier this year the UK experienced exceptional heat, including a June temperature of 37.7C after May had already produced record-breaking warmth. England also recorded its hottest June on record, continuing an extraordinary run of unusually warm weather during 2026.
Current forecasts suggest temperatures above 30C could be recorded somewhere in the UK for as many as 10 consecutive days, making this one of the longest hot spells in recent years if forecasts verify.
European Heat Continues To Influence The UK.
The latest warm weather has developed after intense heat spread across southern Europe, with parts of Spain and Portugal reaching around 40C before the hot air gradually pushed north.
France is also forecast to experience temperatures in the high 30s, while dry conditions across parts of Europe continue to increase the risk of wildfires. Those same weather patterns are helping to draw warmer air towards the UK, although conditions are expected to remain less extreme than those experienced further south.
Heatwave Statistics Worth Knowing.
Extreme heat has become increasingly important for public health across the UK. Official figures from the Office for National Statistics and the UK Health Security Agency found there were 3,271 excess deaths during heat periods across England and Wales in the summer of 2022, while temperatures reached a UK record of 40.3C.
Scientists also warn that prolonged periods of hot weather are becoming more common, making preparation increasingly important for homes, businesses and local authorities.
For Newcastle, this latest heatwave offers another reminder that even the traditionally cooler North East is now seeing longer periods of summer warmth than many residents remember.
