Sunderland Pair Jailed Over Brutal Driver Attack

Sunderland Pair Jailed Over Brutal Driver Attack
Two men have been jailed after a violent attack on a delivery driver in Sunderland left the victim with life-changing injuries, highlighting the dangers faced by frontline workers across the North East, including nearby Newcastle.

The shocking incident happened on the morning of December 16 in Stannington Gardens, where a delivery driver was carrying out his usual round. What began as a routine day quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal when a car arrived in the street and parked nearby.

According to the court, 42-year-old Michael Gill, who is also known as Bobby, climbed into the unattended delivery vehicle and attempted to steal it along with the parcels inside. As the driver rushed back to stop the theft, Gill drove directly into him before running him over and fleeing the scene.

Victim Left With Permanent Injuries.

The delivery driver, a man in his 50s, was left lying seriously injured in the road after the pair escaped. Emergency services rushed to the scene, and he was taken to hospital with life-threatening head injuries.

He spent a week receiving intensive care before continuing his recovery in hospital. Although he has since been discharged, he continues to receive specialist support after suffering permanent injuries as a result of the attack.

Investigators later discovered the stolen vehicle abandoned on Aysgarth Avenue. Police enquiries revealed the suspects had transferred the stolen parcels into their own vehicle before abandoning the delivery van.

Police Investigation Led To Convictions.

Waiting in the suspects' original vehicle was 43-year-old Gary Rarity. After Gill fled in the stolen van, Rarity took over driving their own car and left the area, abandoning the seriously injured victim without offering any assistance.

Officers quickly identified both men and arrested them within days. Although they initially denied any involvement, both later admitted multiple offences during the investigation.

Gill, of Cairo Street, received a prison sentence of three years and seven months. Rarity, of Brick Garth, was sentenced to seven months behind bars for his role in the incident.

Safety Concerns Across The North East.

The case has once again raised concerns about the risks faced by delivery drivers across Sunderland, Newcastle and the wider North East, where thousands of parcels are delivered every day.

Health and Safety Executive figures estimate there were around 689,000 incidents of violence at work across Great Britain during 2024-25, with transport workers among the occupations facing an above-average risk of workplace violence.

The incident also serves as a reminder of the increasing challenges facing delivery drivers, particularly during busy periods when criminals may target vehicles carrying valuable parcels.

While incidents of this severity remain uncommon, police continue to encourage anyone who witnesses suspicious activity involving delivery vehicles to report it immediately.

The sentencing brings a degree of justice for the victim, whose life has been permanently changed by the events of that December morning. It also sends a strong message that violent offences against delivery workers will be met with serious consequences through the courts.

Have your say.

Do you think the sentence in this case fits the seriousness of the crime?
