Between 2002 and 2004, a series of brutal attacks on young women left communities across southwest London living in fear. At first, the crimes appeared random - isolated acts of violence committed under the cover of darkness. But as investigators began connecting evidence, a far more disturbing picture emerged.
Behind the attacks was Levi Bellfield, one of Britain’s most notorious serial killers.
Bellfield’s murders shocked the UK not only because of their savage nature, but because his victims were targeted during ordinary moments of daily life - walking home, waiting at bus stops, or travelling through familiar streets. The case would later expose repeated failures by police to identify a dangerous predator sooner.
More than two decades later, the Levi Bellfield murders remain among the most chilling true crime cases in modern British history.
The Murder of Marsha McDonnell.
The first confirmed victim linked to Bellfield was 19-year-old Marsha McDonnell.
On the evening of February 4, 2003, Marsha was returning home after spending time with friends in Hampton, southwest London. She stepped off a bus near her home and began the short walk along a quiet residential road.
Moments later, she was attacked from behind.
Investigators later determined Marsha had suffered devastating head injuries inflicted with a heavy blunt object. The violence of the assault shocked detectives. Despite emergency treatment, she died in hospital two days later without regaining consciousness.
At the time, police struggled to identify a motive. There was no robbery, no obvious connection between victim and attacker, and few witnesses who could describe the suspect.
The murder left local residents terrified.
Young women in the area became increasingly fearful of walking alone at night, while police warned the public to remain vigilant.
A Pattern of Violence Emerges.
In the months that followed, several other women were violently attacked in southwest London.
Some survived after being struck unexpectedly near bus stops and roadsides. Witness descriptions repeatedly mentioned a white van or suspicious vehicle lingering nearby before attacks occurred.
Investigators slowly began suspecting a serial offender was operating in the area.
But despite growing concerns, police initially struggled to connect the crimes effectively. Bellfield managed to avoid detection while continuing his violent behaviour across multiple boroughs.
Friends and former partners later described Bellfield as controlling, aggressive, and deeply misogynistic. Behind closed doors, he reportedly displayed violent tendencies and explosive rage.
Yet few could imagine the extent of the brutality he was capable of.
The Murder of Amelie Delagrange.
On the night of August 19, 2004, 22-year-old French student Amelie Delagrange was walking home after spending an evening with friends in Twickenham.
As she passed through a quiet riverside area near Twickenham Green, she was savagely attacked.
The assault was ferocious. Amelie suffered catastrophic head injuries after being struck repeatedly with a blunt weapon. A cyclist discovered her critically injured hours later lying unconscious on the path.
Despite intensive medical treatment, she died shortly afterwards in hospital.
The murder intensified public fear throughout southwest London. Detectives recognised similarities between Amelie’s killing and the earlier murder of Marsha McDonnell, particularly the sudden, frenzied nature of the attacks.
A serial predator was now strongly suspected.
Police launched a massive manhunt involving CCTV reviews, forensic analysis, and thousands of public appeals. Officers examined vehicle movements and interviewed known violent offenders across London.
Eventually, investigators began focusing attention on Levi Bellfield.
Who Was Levi Bellfield?
Levi Bellfield worked as a wheel clamper and nightclub bouncer. Physically imposing and known for his explosive temper, he had a history of violence, intimidation, and assaults against women.
He frequently drove around southwest London in vehicles that matched witness descriptions connected to several attacks.
As detectives investigated Bellfield’s movements, they uncovered alarming patterns.
Phone records, witness statements, and forensic evidence increasingly linked him to the murders. Surveillance operations also revealed suspicious behaviour that strengthened police suspicions further.
Investigators eventually searched Bellfield’s home and vehicles, uncovering evidence that connected him directly to the attacks.
The case against him was beginning to build.
The Arrest and Trial.
In November 2004, police arrested Levi Bellfield on suspicion of murder.
During the investigation, detectives examined multiple unsolved attacks involving women in southwest London. Prosecutors argued Bellfield specifically targeted vulnerable young women walking alone at night.
The trial began in 2007 and attracted enormous media attention across Britain.
Jurors heard disturbing details surrounding Bellfield’s violent obsessions and unpredictable behaviour. Witnesses described seeing his vehicle near crime scenes, while forensic evidence linked him directly to the murders of Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange.
The court also heard details about the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, a young woman Bellfield deliberately ran over before attacking with a hammer as she walked along a roadside in Isleworth in 2004. Miraculously, she survived.
Prosecutors described Bellfield as a calculating predator driven by hatred and violent impulses.
In February 2008, Levi Bellfield was convicted of the murders of Marsha McDonnell and Amelie Delagrange, along with the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy.
He received a whole life sentence, ensuring he would never be released from prison.
The Milly Dowler Revelation.
The case took an even darker turn in 2011 when Bellfield was convicted of the murder of 13-year-old schoolgirl Milly Dowler.
Milly disappeared in Surrey in March 2002 while walking home from school. Her disappearance became one of Britain’s most widely followed missing person investigations.
Years later, investigators linked Bellfield to the crime after re-examining evidence and witness accounts.
The revelation horrified the nation.
It confirmed that Bellfield’s pattern of violence had begun earlier than previously realised and demonstrated the terrifying breadth of his crimes.
Bellfield denied responsibility, but prosecutors presented compelling evidence placing him near the location where Milly vanished.
His conviction cemented his reputation as one of Britain’s most dangerous serial killers.
The Lasting Impact of the Bellfield Murders.
The Levi Bellfield murders exposed serious concerns regarding how violent repeat offenders were monitored and investigated.
Questions were raised about missed opportunities to identify Bellfield sooner, especially given his history of assaults, domestic violence, and threatening behaviour.
The case also highlighted the vulnerability many women face while travelling alone, particularly at night.
For many London residents, the fear generated during the killings lingered long after Bellfield’s arrest.
Today, the crimes remain a chilling reminder of how predators can hide behind seemingly ordinary lives while committing acts of horrifying violence.
The Legacy of Levi Bellfield.
Even years later, the names of Marsha McDonnell, Amelie Delagrange, Kate Sheedy, and Milly Dowler remain closely associated with one of the darkest true crime stories in modern British history.
The brutality of Bellfield’s attacks, combined with the randomness of his victim selection, created widespread fear that gripped London for years.
While Bellfield will spend the rest of his life behind bars, the emotional damage caused by his crimes continues to affect victims’ families and communities to this day.
Do you believe police could have identified Levi Bellfield earlier before more lives were lost?
