Northumbria Police have launched an urgent appeal for information following the reported rape of a woman on Newcastle's Town Moor.
Officers say the incident happened between 1.15pm and 2.15pm on Tuesday after the woman, who is in her 40s, reportedly met a man she did not know a short time earlier on a footbridge connecting Claremont Road with the Spital Tongues area. Police believe the alleged offence then took place on the Town Moor before the suspect left the area heading towards Grandstand Road.
Specially trained officers are continuing to support the victim while detectives carry out a detailed investigation into the incident.
Description of the suspect released.
Police have released a description of the man they would like to identify as enquiries continue.
He is described as a white man in his mid-30s, around 5ft 8in tall, with a muscular build and short dark hair featuring grey flecks. Officers believe he was wearing black jogging bottoms, a white T-shirt and was riding a pedal bicycle.
Detectives stress that the description is being shared to help identify the individual and are asking members of the public not to speculate about anyone's identity on social media.
Appeal for CCTV and dashcam footage.
Extensive enquiries are already under way, including reviews of CCTV from nearby locations. Investigators are also asking anyone who was travelling through or spending time around Town Moor, Claremont Road, Spital Tongues or Grandstand Road during the relevant time period to check any dashcam, cycle camera or home security footage they may have.
Even information that may appear insignificant could prove valuable in helping officers establish the movements of those involved.
The Town Moor is one of Newcastle's best known open spaces and is regularly used by walkers, runners, cyclists and visitors throughout the day. Because of the number of people who pass through the area, police believe someone may have witnessed activity that could assist the investigation.
Public assistance could prove crucial.
Anyone who was in the area between 1.15pm and 2.15pm on Tuesday, or who noticed anything unusual, is urged to contact Northumbria Police as soon as possible. Detectives are particularly interested in speaking with people who may have seen a man matching the released description riding a bicycle near the Town Moor or surrounding roads.
Police remind the public that information can still be important, even if it seems minor. Timely witness accounts and digital evidence often help investigators build a clearer picture of events.
Why witness information matters.
Cases involving serious offences often rely on a combination of witness statements, CCTV, forensic evidence and digital footage to establish timelines and identify suspects. Police investigations can be significantly strengthened when members of the public come forward quickly with relevant information.
Government figures also show cycling remains a common way to travel across England, meaning cyclists equipped with helmet cameras could unknowingly capture evidence that assists investigations. Transport statistics continue to highlight the growing use of bicycles and active travel across the country.
Police also note that many serious crimes are solved through community cooperation, reinforcing the importance of local residents and visitors sharing anything they may have seen.
If you were in the Town Moor area of Newcastle at the relevant time, or have CCTV or dashcam footage that could assist detectives, you are encouraged to contact Northumbria Police quoting the details of the appeal.
