Attempted Murder Probe Launched in Newcastle

Three people have been arrested after an alleged knife attack in Newcastle city centre left three people in hospital with serious injuries during the early hours of Monday morning.

Northumbria Police confirmed officers were called shortly after midnight following reports of an altercation near Blackett Street and John Dobson Street. Emergency services quickly attended the scene, where several people were found injured.

A large police operation remained in place throughout the morning as detectives carried out forensic examinations and gathered evidence. Cordons were established around parts of the city centre, while Monument Metro station was temporarily closed before reopening shortly after 7am.

Three suspects remain in hospital.

Police said two boys, aged 16 and 17, along with a 20-year-old man, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

According to investigators, the 20-year-old man, one of the 16-year-olds and another 17-year-old all suffered serious injuries consistent with those caused by a bladed article. Despite the severity of their injuries, all three are expected to survive and remain in hospital receiving treatment.

At this stage, detectives believe everyone involved was known to each other. Officers have stressed that enquiries remain ongoing and have urged members of the public not to speculate while the investigation continues.

Increased police presence in Newcastle.

Residents, commuters and visitors to Newcastle city centre may notice an increased police presence over the coming days as enquiries continue.

Northumbria Police says additional officers are patrolling the area to provide reassurance and speak with anyone who may have concerns following the incident. Detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses, CCTV footage and anyone with information that could help establish exactly what happened.

Emergency response launched overnight.

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed it dispatched a significant emergency response after receiving reports of the incident shortly after midnight.

Three double-crewed ambulances, a duty officer, a clinical team leader, three Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles and a doctor attended the scene. Three patients were taken to hospital, with two suffering serious injuries.

Metro operator Nexus also confirmed Monument station was temporarily closed at the request of Northumbria Police before reopening to passengers early on Monday morning.

Knife crime remains a national concern.

While detectives continue to investigate this incident, knife crime remains a major issue across England and Wales.

According to the latest official crime figures, police recorded around 49,000 offences involving a knife or sharp instrument in England and Wales during the year ending December 2025, highlighting the continued challenge facing police forces nationwide. Government data is used by police and local authorities to help target violence reduction initiatives and community safety programmes.

Although investigators believe this latest Newcastle incident involved people already known to one another, officers say visible policing and community cooperation remain vital in helping keep the city centre safe.
