Residents from across Newcastle are being encouraged to gather in the city centre later this month as Armed Forces Day returns with a programme of commemorative events, family activities and opportunities to recognise the contribution of serving personnel, veterans and cadets.
The annual event, organised by Newcastle City Council, will take place on Saturday, 27 June, bringing together members of the armed forces community and the wider public for a day of remembrance, reflection and celebration. The gathering highlights Newcastle's long-standing connection to the military and the city's continued support for those who have served the country.
Civic Centre Ceremony to Lead Celebrations.
The day will begin at Newcastle Civic Centre, where veterans and cadets will assemble before marching onto Ceremonial Way for the official proceedings. Joined by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, participants will take part in a flag-raising ceremony designed to honour the service and sacrifice of armed forces personnel past and present.
During the ceremony, the Last Post will be played before the Armed Forces Day flag is raised. A minute's silence will follow in memory of those who lost their lives while serving the nation. The tribute will conclude with the Reveille and the National Anthem, creating a moment of reflection in the heart of Newcastle.
Veterans attending the ceremony have been encouraged to wear military medals, regimental ties or berets as a visible sign of their service and commitment.
Newcastle's Strong Armed Forces Connection.
Newcastle has a proud military heritage and remains home to a significant armed forces community. Across the North East, thousands of veterans continue to live and work in local communities, while military organisations and support groups provide assistance to former service personnel and their families.
According to the latest UK Government figures, there are more than 1.8 million veterans living across Great Britain. In addition, the Ministry of Defence reports that the UK Armed Forces comprise over 180,000 trained and untrained personnel across the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force. These figures highlight the scale of the armed forces community and the importance of events such as Armed Forces Day in recognising their contribution.
For Newcastle residents, the annual celebration also provides an opportunity to learn more about the support networks available to veterans and military families throughout the region.
Family Attractions and Military Displays Planned.
Following the official ceremony, visitors will be able to explore a range of stalls, exhibits and activities throughout the day. Organisations including the Royal Air Forces Association, HMS Calliope and the Joint Ex-Serviceman's Association will be on hand to offer information and advice.
Military vehicle displays, live music performances and interactive activities are expected to attract families from across Newcastle and surrounding areas. Organisers hope the event will provide both an educational experience and a chance for residents to show their appreciation for those who serve.
The event is free to attend and open to all members of the public, making it one of the city's most inclusive community gatherings of the summer.
City Leaders Encourage Public Support.
Newcastle City Council's Armed Forces Champion, Councillor David Down, said Armed Forces Day remains an important occasion for recognising the courage, dedication and sacrifice demonstrated by military personnel.
He highlighted Newcastle's long tradition of supporting the armed forces community and encouraged residents to attend what is expected to be a meaningful and uplifting event.
Local veteran Christopher Lloyd-James, Chair of the Royal Air Forces Association in Newcastle, also emphasised the importance of public support. He noted that events like Armed Forces Day help veterans reconnect with former colleagues, remember those who have been lost and feel valued by the communities they served.
Full Programme for Armed Forces Day.
The event opens at 10am, with cadets and standards forming up from 10.20am. The parade will step off at 10.40am before the official ceremony begins at 10.45am.
Following the flag-raising ceremony and commemorative tribute, visitors can enjoy exhibitions, displays and activities from 11.15am onwards. The event will conclude at 3pm.
As Newcastle prepares to mark Armed Forces Day, organisers hope the occasion will bring together people of all ages to celebrate service, remember sacrifice and strengthen community ties across the city.
